the engine stops running after about an hour of cutting with the throddle on high. it will run forever with the mower off but when you engage the mower it starts sputtering and dies after a short time. the mower seems to be ok and not under any abnormal load. i changed the air and fuel filter and replaced the plug. i also cleaned the fuel pump. any suggestions as to what the problem could be? the engine is a 16hp Kohler Command OHV.

Usually, I would think it is a carb. problem, but could one of your deck spindles or the pulleys at the front be getting hot and beginning to seize when hot. Suggest carefully, touching the pulleys to see if they are hot. Usually when the pulleys at the front sieze you see fire and smoke. Another possibility is the PTO clutch assembly getting hot.

I've currently got a push mower that will run all day and chokes and stalls every time you start to engage. It sounds allot like my trouble. ....

Your comment that it "sputters and dies" leads me to think it is not getting enough fuel to run wide open under load.
I would check that the fuel pump is working properly.

If it is not the fuel pump I would look at some sort of electrical failure as the machine warms up from the work, my experience usually though has been that electrical failures result in the motor dying more like the key was turned off.

Best of luck. ....
